Dance ‘Til You’re Dead recently conducted an interesting interview with Bottin, in which the Italian artist discusses the electronic music scene in Venice and Vietnam.  He also offeres three very sound words of advice that you can read all about here.

Lindstrøm and Todd Terje have come in at number 28 on Spin’s list of “The 40 Best Songs of 2013 So Far.”  Their track Lanzarote is described by Spin as “pure boingy-bass, Moroder-soundscape propulsion drenched in sheets of synth arpeggios, keyboard-pumping melodrama…”  You can give the track a listen and see Spin’s complete list here.

Last month saw the release of Roberto Rodriguez feat. Max C – Lies Remixes Part 1.  Just in time for Sonar weekend the Helsinki based artist will release part 2 of the remixes.  ”Lies feat Max C.” was originally released on Rodriguez’s critically acclaimed debut album Dawn.  Now the track is being remixed by the likes of Kyodai and Satin Jackets.

Stefan Goldmann has created a new work called Trails that is arranged for three percussion players and live electronics.  The work was commissioned by Ny Musikk and Only Connect Festival in Oslo, where the project will see its debut this Friday.  Goldmann writes, “In Trails, players are required to translate a purely electronic composition into acoustic sound. Instead of loudspeakers, human performers re-imagine physical instruments and techniques that mirror the synthetically produced musical gestures. The original source in its entirety is never revealed to the audience, encouraging decidedly differing conversions in subsequent performances.”

André Bratten is a Norwegian electronic artist following in footsteps similar to those of his fellow countrymen Lindstrøm and Todd Terje.  His debut album, Be A Man You Ant, released earlier this month on Full Pupp is a melodic journey that never exposes the fact that it was created on a single modular synthesizer.  André’s unique brand of Norwegian disco slowly reveals itself over the course of his long curated tracks, which are surely to remain stuck in your head long after they’ve finished playing.

André is ideally booked as a live act.

This week saw the release of Tiga and Jori Hulkkonen’s new 12″ Trust Your Body on Turbo Recordings.  The longtime friends are back with four new tracks that Tiga describes as a way ”… to get my music into some of the darker clubs, the kind where you see obese Goth kids drinking Red Bull out of goblets and somebody’s uncle wearing one of those weird studded strap things. I want to say harness, but nothing’s holding this guy back when my song comes on.”  You can find out just what Tiga is referring to by heading over to SoundCloud where you can give the 12″ a listen.

Next month also sees Jori return with a new track titled “Children of the Concrete” on the debut compilation from My Favorite Robot. The release is described as “featuring a diverse and enticing mix of entirely exclusive music from some of the hottest electronic producers around.”  Other featured artists include Stefan Z, James Teej and Lomez, among many others.  The compilation is available for listening here.

And as if Jori hasn’t been busy enough, he’s also part of the duo Sin Cos Tan with fellow Finn Juho Paalosmaa.  You can watch the official video for their track “History” on YouTube now!

Italy’s top source for electronic music, Soundwall, has recently published an interview and exclusive podcast with Daniele Baldelli.  Just last month saw the release of Baldelli’s latest album, Back To My Funky Side.  It seems the Italian artist has been keeping busy with an exclusive mix for Soundwall that can be found here.  And for those of you that can read Italian, a short interview can also be found here.  All of this is a nice warm up for the For Festival that he will be playing in Croatia next month.  If you’re interested in attending full details are now online.

Egyptian Nipples is the name of Massimiliano Pagliara’s new musical project with French producer, composer and performance artist Jules Etienne.  The two have collaborated on an EP set to drop June 3rd on Apersonal Music.  This is not the first time the two artist have found themselves working together and therefore, they describe the formation of their collaborative project as simply, “…a matter of time.”  You can find more details and buy the EP here. For you Italian speakers out there, head over to Soundwall for a review of Vidis’ “Silence Please!”  The compilation is the Lithuania artist’s debut on Get Physical and features 15 wonderfully curated tracks, many of them featuring Vidis himself.  He describes the album as “…showcasing the Vilnius House scene and its most creative and inspiring personalities and moments…”  Also of note is the fact that all songs featured on the compilation are new, exclusive and previously unreleased!  It’s on sale over at Beatport so hurry up and give it a listen!

Oslo’s Maaemo restaurant has designed a brunch around Lindstrøm’s Smalhans record of last year. The six-course meal is scheduled to take place during the Øya festival happening this summer.  Lindstrøm plans to perform the six songs from his record alongside the presentation of each course.  Smalhans itself was inspired by food with track names translating to such things as “dried salted lamb meat”.  The event itself has been titled Maaelstrøm, meaning “The Meal”.  Tickets are 1500 Norwegian kroner, or 199€, and limited to 30 guests.

Bottin (Guglielmo Bottin, 1977) is producer, dj and sound designer based in Venice, Italy Bottin makes music only an Italian can make… probably Take a youth spent against a background of old Italian Giallo soundtracks, add in late 70s Italian disco influences, a touch of free and easy west-coast vibe and a smattering of kitsch. That just about half describes Bottin.
 
Early works include two albums (Chill Reception in 2002 and I Love Me Vol. I in 2004), Later he started working as producer and remixes for major Italian pop artists like Lucio Dalla, Donatella Rettore, Sergio Caputo and Spanish group Chambao.
 
As sound artist he was selected for Fabrica, the Benetton creative research center founded by Oliviero Toscani. For Colors Magazine he curated the Color Music series, presented at the Sonar festival in Barcelona. For the Biennale of Venice he designed audio for Spanish Pavilion.
 
Bottin’s seminal releases include “Fondamente Nove” on Eskimo Records (2008) and “No Static” for American label Italians Do It Better (2009). Bottin soon moved to the forefront of the contemporary disco scene with his concept album “Horror Disco” on Bearfunk Records UK, which garnered critical praise for its dashing display of all of Italo’s delights without the pastiche. The album’s title may conjure up images of a Goblin inspired trip through Dario Argento horror movie nostalgia, but in actuality it is filled with thick, Moroder-esque basslines that inspire dancing rather than dread. Horror Disco has sold out 2 cd editions and is currently been repressed in a double-LP special collector’s edition.
 
in 2010 Bottin is back on Eskimo Recordings with Galli/Piazza Venezia (produced together with Rodion) in which the signature italo-disco approach gradually blends into a housed-up dancefloor anthem. Shortly after, Nang Records releases “Discoursive Diversions”, a collection of remixes by Bottin for artists like Lindstrom, In Flagranti, Tosca and many more.
 
2011 saw the release of the Discocracy single on Eskimo Recordings (followed by the Discocracy Revisited remix EP) as well as Aztaro, a collaboration between Bottin, Justus Köhncke and Rusty Egan of Visage.
 
With an exhaustive touring schedule covering over 20 countries and 4 continents, from North America to Australia, Brazil to Hong Kong, from Europe’s best underground parties to cult events like We Love Space in Ibiza, Bottin’s reputation as both producer and DJ is a steadily growing force to be reckoned with. His sets are an unpredictable journey into space disco, italo rarities, and deep funk. Melbourne promoters Darkbeat will celebrate their 10th anniversary with a three-disc compilation this May.
 
The party has long been a techno and house institution in Victoria, hosting acts like Sven Väth, Sasha, Derrick Carter and James Zabiela. Now the company are venturing into the record business, launching Darkbeat Recordings with a triple mix album. Several years ago, before digital media became the norm, I remember being handed a mixtape by one of my friends. It was a collection of house and techno delights from various artists, and at the time I didn’t know the names of any of the tracks or their producers but, as time went on I discovered some of them. Among the many gems on the mixtape was a track by Metro Area – as always, as soon I discovered the duo (Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani) I delved into their back catalogue and unearthed one fantastic track after another. Metro Area are renowned throughout the music world for their classic take on electronic music, full of soul and funk – music that really gets you dancing. Their influence is widespread and they have universal respect from within the electronic music community. Ahead of their first live performance in over a decade, I was fortunate enough to be able to ask both men some questions…
 
You guys grew up in New Jersey and New York… What effect would you say your hometown has had on your musical direction?
 
Darshan: Of course, I didn’t realize it when I was a kid, but I think we definitely benefited from certain influences and values growing up in the general vicinity of New York. Morgan’s hometown is about 30-40 minutes from Manhattan on the New Jersey side of the Hudson, and I come from a town about an hour north of the Bronx, between New York and Woodstock. This whole area has a pretty great cultural history.

Morgan: We both grew up in truly suburban environments, meaning we were outside of the city but still within reach and therefore affected by it. We were influenced heavily by its radio stations (KISS-FM etc..) and culture.
 
What kind of stuff were you into when you first discovered your love for music?
 
Darshan: Like so many other kids, I started with my Dad’s records and tapes. It was a mixture of stuff – mostly 60s and 70s rock. Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, Lata Mangeshkar, John Lennon & Plastic Ono Band’s “Sometime in New York City” album, which was slept-on at the time, but is now kind of a cult classic, co-produced by Phil Spector. Though I have to say, I had just as much fun looking at and reading the cover art as I did listening.
 
MG: I can’t remember not being into music. My older siblings had a major effect on me. Devo was huge for me as a little kid. You could listen to it as a child or an as adult. I could bounce around to simple lyrics and melodies but knew there was something naughty going on that I didn’t understand yet. I listen now as an adult and it’s pretty subversive stuff.
 
Who were your inspirations within rock music?
 
Darshan: By the time I had any sense of inspiration from rock it was probably 1979 or 1980. So I was into radio stuff like Foreigner, AC/DC, Toto, bands like that. I heard “Tom Sawyer” by Rush in my cousin’s car and the synthesizer sounds blew my mind. I liked Ozzy Osbourne when I was like 8 or 9, being too young to really know about the much cooler Black Sabbath stuff.
 
MG: One of the first songs I got into as a baby – and I’m not kidding, I used to mosh around to it – was “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. It was released the year I was born. The production of classic rock is amazing… that kind of dead room disco sound, but more expensive. Later I got into prog rock, that my brother listened to, like Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Rush… Stuff like that.

Radio Slave has mixed the 23rd instalment of the Balance series.
 
Matt Edwards follows the likes of Nic Fanciulli, Deetron and, most recently, Funk D’Void, in mixing an edition of the Australian series. The Rekids chief has released a handful of commercial mixes over the years, most notably fabric 48 back in 2009. The first half of two-disc package has a decidedly housey tracklist, with cuts from Delano Smith, Nina Kraviz, DJ Bone and Larry Heard among others. The second disc is a more laidback affair, with Ryuchi Sakamoto, Herbie Hancock and J Dilla all featuring. Edwards’s own productions (as Radio Slave, The Machine and one half of Quiet Village project with Joel Martin) are sprinkled across both CDs.
 
“The idea of a double disc [mix] is something that totally suits me down to the ground,” he says. “I’m interested in so many types of music. So with the Balance compilation I knew I’d have to take one mix in a clubbier direction and then the second disc would be all about showcasing tracks from my favourite producers and creating an environment for home listening that isn’t just wallpaper.”
