Mikael Nordgren of Sweden makes house and electro that is so sophisticated, DJs who want to drop his tracks are advised to wear a dinner jacket and cufflinks as standard. This is actually a cover of Robert Johnson’s ‘Cross Roads Blues’ and has a great late-night, Tiga feel to it. It sounds like somethinging you have found on Deep Dish’ old Yoshitoshi label. Stay classy, Tiger Stripes.

MFR048 – Tiger Stripes – Crossroads – My Favorite Robot Records by My Favorite Robot Records

Mikael Nordgren is a fantasist, turning glitterballs into looking glasses offering you directions to wonderlands, and then thinking (and in the end, ably executing) the mythology of getting fashion conscious electro-house prepared to mix in with some of the grittier sides of dance without upsetting either’s profile. ‘Dancer of the Dance’ is your staple diet of breathy vocals, hair-slicked performance and carefree babbling from the Stockholmer, kept grounded by a synth line rocking rusty bottom ends to add an acerbic dash to the synth imagery. ‘Crossroads’ comes back to the future and on edge from the 80s, daringly taking on a Robert Johnson cover (okay, essentially doing a 1930s remix will likely go over the majority of hairsprayed heads) and filling it with vaporous nervous energy for a fine fit of tense electro-pop bubbling away like a proto-acid hopeful. Like Jamie Principle’s ‘Your Love’ set in a parallel universe.
 
Smoothed out even further by the Finn Phonogenic, nine minutes of dream weaving are prepared for dipping across the other side of the mirror into a new dimension of wanderlust, synths shooting across like an aurora borealis. Deep house that’s tingling enough thanks to Nordgren unveiling himself on the mic, Tuomas Salmela’s instrumental should set up shop on ambient compilations spinning at God’s own listening post, offering you entrance to a pristine world whose willowy scare tactics – Tiger Stripes having been reading up on ‘Energy Flash’ – are somehow simultaneously reassuring and a beautiful pulsation through time standing still.
