Marcus Worgull – DJ Mix Spring 2012 by Innervisions

Injustement méconnu en France, et généralement toujours resté en retrait par rapport aux poids lourds du label Innervisions (Dixon, Âme et Henrik Schwarz), l’Allemand Marcus Worgull n’a pourtant absolument rien à envier à ses comparses. Ses quatre EP en dix ans témoignent certes d’un certain perfectionnisme sur le plan de la production, mais surtout d’un véritable talent pour le DJing.

C’est suite à un set exceptionnel que j’ai demandé ce podcast à Marcus. Lors d’un weekend improvisé à Prague, je m’étais rendu au seul événement clubbing valable de la ville, organisé par un sosie français de Derrick May à bord d’un minuscule bateau amarré aux quai de la Vltava.
Bières à 1,20€, jolies Tchèques, stoners locaux ayant le sens du partage, Biélorusses férus de géopolitique, Islandais hilares lorsqu’on leur reprochait d’avoir failli nous laisser coincés en France à cause de leur volcan de merde : tous les pré-requis étaient réunis pour une soirée mémorable. Il ne manquait que deux choses : la touche “what the fuck ?”, qui allait prendre la forme d’une inexplicable salle de baby-foot tout droit sortie d’un diner américain (éclairage au néon et bande-son hard rock FM comprise) située à l’étage de l’embarcation, et bien sûr, la musique.
Et nous fûmes fort bien servis : comme Derrick avait eu l’excellente idée de programmer son invité toute la nuit, ce dernier put démontrer six heures durant toute l’étendue de son talent avec un mix inspiré, alternant les hauts et les bas, navigant entre phases gangster, moments feutrés et passages enjoués (les inévitables tubes Innervisions tels que celui-ci), avant d’envoyer tout le monde en transe avec l’Hypnotica Remix de “At Les” par Christian Smith et de terminer en douceur.

Voici donc pour vous un mélange dans le plus pur style du versant “house en robe de chambre” d’Innervisions, idéal pour un réveil en douceur ou un dimanche soir mélancolique.

Philomena thinks it’s time for a new, more complex artwork and her friends also think it’s the best edition ever. Another first-timer is the fact that on her sixth release, there is not only an edit by Marcus Worgull on Fink’s ‘Move On Me’ to be found (which follows his move on bringing back guitars into house music like on his latest Innervisions release), but also an original track on the flipside. Red Rack’em contributes his composition ‘Kalimba’ which has already received attention in Dixon’s and Âme’s DJ sets and is, of course, much loved by Philomena herself.

Dancing with tears in your eyes on the remixes of ?Plastic Romance?, one of the ace tracks off of ?What About The Magnetic Fields??, Space Ranger?s debut album on Lovemonk. The German outfit returns with it fourth single on Lovemonk, the wonderful ?Plastic Romance? featuring the chilly vocals of Captn K, who can also be heard on previous single ?Nightmoves?. Bonar Bradberry throws some beef on the barbie and turns the slo-mo disco original into a ultra-funky dancefloor stormer, while the fabulous Rimshooters, a.k.a. Massimiliano Pagliara and Rotciv, speed it up and take it back to the eighties. Motorcity Drum Ensemble shift into fifth gear as well and undress the tune while they?re at it, leaving Captn K sounding even chillier. Groove Attack & Innervisions hero Marcus Worgull liked the MCDE remix so much, he decided to do his own edit of it. A fabulous package if ever there was one.

Background info:

Space Ranger come from the stars. The trio based in Stuttgart has a wide experience and an unlimited love for music. In their previous disguises, among which Dublex Inc, they have done remixes for the likes of Kool and The Gang, Sugababes or Kurtis Blow, but now they are absolutely focused on this project, brewing disco and house for today’s dance floors from samples taken from their huge record collections. Knowledge is power and space is the place.
