Hunee – The Lowest Animal [DKMNTL AS5.3] by Hunee
Hunee’s 2009 release ‘Bobos In Paradise’ EP finally sees a follow up with the double A side single ‘Tide / Minnoch’.
Hunee’s output has always been quite sparse, but when he puts forth some of his creations its always a joy to be on the receiving end. And again, with this release, Hunee treats us with two gems.
‘Tide’ is a mid-tempo burner that pulsates around an infectious analog synth line.. It gets you in the mood and lifts you up. Explosive stuff!
‘Minnoch’ is a playful, exotic work-out which sounds like a nightly trip through the jungle on a far-away island. Tropical house at its best.
We can’t get enough of Hunee’s music and are happy to announce that he is currently working on his debut long-player for Rush Hour, which is scheduled for release summer 2012.

With his first ever gig in Australia penned for this Friday at our humbled Mercat Basement in Melbourne, thanks to Animals Dancing, Hunee, Berlin’s favoured disco DJ come raw house producer is currently making the long journey to our city. Despite a nervous moment having his flight delayed a couple of days thanks to Berlin’s intense snow, he will now be touching down here tomorrow with his records and beach attire in tow.
With the vibe on the party already large, we fired a few questions over his way to get you in the mood for what is set to be, albeit we probably say this too often, one of the best nights out you’ll have this year. We hope you’re ready to dance for 5 + hours straight!
So we’re all very excited to have you here for the first time this Friday for Animals Dancing in Melbourne. By the sounds of it you’re going to be cutting it a little fine though?
Thanks! Yes, getting in on friday morning from berlin, its crazy, what a trip!
Tell us about ‘Hunchin All Night’ your residency at Soju Bar in Berlin in which you grace the decks all night long. How did that come about and what is it that you love so much about playing 5+ hour sets into the early hours?
The owner liked what I did on my first night there and the size, sound and vibe of Soju Bar is the perfect balance between musical freedom and relaxed atmosphere… When you play long sets, and you’re connected to the crowd, you get into this area, where every song you play means more and has a deeper impact. I love the feeling of a journey that start and ends and has a storyline. Generally difficult to achieve in 2 hours around peaktime.
Your DJ sets which are available online vary hugely in flavour showcasing your extremely eclectic taste, but is it fair to say that Disco is your number one when it comes to working a crowd? How did that love affair with Disco begin?
Yes, in terms of a creating a dancing vibe, disco records are what comes most naturally to me. Haha, my love affair with Disco… of course on the dancefloor, where else!?!
As a now Berlin resident of more than a decade, how do you feel about the mass migration to your hometown from aspiring DJ’s and producers the world over?
I don’t care about it. Well, it’s nice to meet people who think and do interesting things, but this also happened before everyone had Berlin in their minds. My life doesn’t get affected too much by what might seem like a ’mass migration’.
As a known vinyl head, how do you go about packing your bag when travelling long distances, ie. Australia? Do you justify taking many records or is it just too difficult?
Sometime ago I got this very handy travel trolley. What ever fits in there comes with me. I spend the last days recording countless vinyls and burning cds. I still feel weird bringing less and less vinyl to my gigs abroad, but by playing strictly uncompressed wav files, I try to tell myself that its fine.
What do you plan on doing in your time between long sweaty DJ sets and customary hangovers whilst down under?
Riding a bike, eating at all the spots, drinking all the drinks, swimming round the sharks, following a kangaroo, tanning my bellybutton, making friends with the sun.

Hunee’s First trip to OZ, Five minute Question & Answer Session! Everyone in Australia is very excited to have you down under for the first time! We hope you’re gearing up for it, packing your swimmers and bringing us better weather to our wet summer!
Now onto the short little Q&A:
Firstly, what excites you most about coming to Australia besides seeing old friends and the blue ocean water?
What could be more interesting, than exploring a new continent! Also, leaving the berlin winter in order to chase down summer is a dream never fullfilled so far. Can’t wait!
What producer or DJ would you die to play alongside or produce with?
Uhhh, just thinking about the nights i already shared with great DJ’s like Mark Seven, Sadar Bahar, Traxx or Carlos Souffront almost kills me. Tonight i play in Amsterdam with Antal from Rush Hour, he is a DJ i always wanted to hear live in action – hope this won’t kill me. I played with people i expected so much from and was dissapointed, and then again, at times, i play with locals from everywhere or friends from around and they kill me with their feeling and programming.
What is the most memorable gig you’ve ever played, and why?
Top 3! in no order…
Panorama Bar last year on sunday evening on Prosumers record release party alongside Murat Tepeli, Larry Heard, Tyree Cooper, Prosumer himself and right after Soundstream. After the first nervous 20 minutes of “getting into it” – i felt like flying! Deeply connected to the crowd, being fed with courage to play better than ever. It was it!
Croatia, 2010, Electric Elephant festival, beach stage, late evening, open air. I started with a Pepe Braddock record, found myself stranded on the west african coast in 1980 and ended the journey with sleazy, balearic, hands-in-the-air jams. Nuff said.
My 5hours + + + sets in a basement in russia, in a pitch black club in japan, in a bar in berlin.
Vinyl or CDs? Why?
Both, because no night is the same.
What’s your main or pivotal focus when making a track?
It changes all the time. Sometimes i want to explore a certain synth, another time i want to duplicate an existing track i like, in order to understand how the structure is build, how the sounds work together. Sometimes i play around and get chord changes i wanna use, find samples on records i listen to, another time its just a hi-hat figure that triggers all the ideas for the entire track.
If there was one talent you wish you possessed, what would it be?
Playing the piano. And finishing tracks.
Do you have any favorite Australian producers?
I love em all.
By reading your past interviews you tend to use the word ‘lazy’ frequently, though by looking at all of your releases, you seem quite the opposite. When producing, do you have a specific plan of attack in the studio for getting a track done & dusted?
Hmm, lazy, is that so? Haha, well, i don’t think its lazyness. I am just interested in a lot of things, things that find their expression outside the record bag or studio. Studio work is simple, i have a deadline, i try to get it done (most of the time a rather painful process). I dont have a deadline, i work on whatever is fun and comes natural (which sometimes is vacuum cleaning the floor or drinking a whiskey)
You’ve been quoted as using both computers and outboard gear to produce your music, can you tell us a bit more about which synths get switched on most when you’re jamming?
Juno 106. Period. I like my rhodes plugin for jamming harmonies.
When you’re in charge of making that dancefloor move like crazy, what sounds do you call on to make it a reality?
Generally i like the human element in dj-ing, risks, fuckups, surprises, sweat. I prefer tracks from the other side of the cliched formula or maybe i just prefer another formula… I have an idea of a certain functional sound aesthetic, these are sounds, i try to stay away from.
And well, naturally, i call on the sounds that drive me crazy!
After releasing over a dozen beguiling, befuddling, and playful disco edits, the Italian producer Nicholas is finally churning out his own original productions. The second single from his forthcoming 4lux album, Still Playing House, is a beast. Free To Be is a monstrous, house-submerged affair, as low-slung as they come and in a classic Murk vibe. Berliner Hunee delivers a spot on remix on the title track and brings it into deeper territory reminiscent of early Prescription releases. He is transforming the original mix into something fuller, warmer and almost epic. Down To Nothing is another slow pumping house nugget. With its soothing and soaring synths, ebb-and-flow arrangement, inviting melody and vocals, this is another bomb fitting every house set.
